Sedation Dentistry

Dental phobias can make you avoid the dental care you need for a healthy and beautiful smile.

Sedation dentistry allows patients to comfortably undergo dental procedures to maintain or restore their oral health.

Dr. Reagan Bonner and Dr. David Bonner in Dumas, TX, offer several sedation options to give patients an anxiety-free dental experience.

Forms of Sedation Dentistry Offered at Our Dumas Dental Practice

Our dentists offer several options to help even the most anxious patient undergo dental procedures. Our sedation options include:

Nitrous Oxide

Woman with nose mask

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is breathed in through a mask over the nose. This form of sedation works quickly to help patients relax while remaining awake. Nitrous oxide also wears off quickly once the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home and resume your normal activities following treatment.

Oral Conscious

Medication in hand

Oral conscious sedation involves your dentist prescribing a sedative that you take before your appointment. This induces a state of relaxation, yet you remain conscious throughout the procedure. Because it takes longer to wear off, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home from your appointment.

IV Sedation

IV drip

This method offers the deepest form of relaxation and is often used for more complex procedures like wisdom teeth removal, tooth extractions, or implant placement or for patients with severe anxiety. Your dentist or oral surgeon administers medication through an IV and you may have little or no memory of your procedure.

Was the first time I have actually enjoyed going to dentist. The professional that was taking care of me was awesome. Very friendly, very professional, explained everything that was happening, had video of xrays and went over everything it revealed on a screen . Absolutely the best dental care I have had in 65+ years.

Sedation Dentistry  Frequently Asked Questions

Will my dental insurance cover sedation?

This varies by insurance plan and provider. We will verify your coverage before your treatment to determine if your sedation will be covered by your dental insurance.

Will sedation make me unconscious?

No. While you may be so relaxed you fall asleep, sedation isn't intended to make you unconscious. Oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide sedation allow you to remain awake and relaxed during treatment. IV sedation is a deeper method of sedation that can induce a twilight state. An oral surgeon may perform general anesthesia to put you to sleep if your procedure calls for it.

Will I remember my treatment?

It depends on your method of sedation and the medication that is used. While IV sedation may have an amnesiac effect that causes you to have little or no memory of your procedure, nitrous oxide is milder and you may remember everything.

Will sedation keep me from feeling pain?

No. Our dentist uses local anesthetics and other pain medication in conjunction with sedation dentistry. The anesthetic will block pain while the sedation keeps you calm and relaxed. If at any point you are in pain or uncomfortable, please inform your dental team so we can make adjustments to address your discomfort as soon as possible.
