What Are Wisdom Teeth
and Why Do They Need to Be Removed?
At the very back of our jaws, we may have a set of wisdom teeth, also called third molars. These teeth are unnecessary and often cause problems.
The real concern is when your molars become impacted, which can cause discomfort, swelling, dental misalignment, and even infection. By letting us coordinate your wisdom teeth removal, you can find relief quickly.
Common Misconceptions About Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom Tooth Impaction Is Inevitable
While some patients can seek preventative removal if they're eligible and it looks like their wisdom teeth may be a problem in the future, the truth is that not all patients will require an extraction. Generally speaking, wisdom teeth tend to emerge by the time you turn 25, but only some cases result in impaction or even require removal at all.
All Patients Have Four Wisdom Teeth
Sometimes, patients may not have four wisdom teeth. They could have two, eight, or even none at all. Of course, the number of wisdom teeth you have will be no surprise to your oral surgeon or dentist, because taking X-rays of your mouth is a crucial step in all wisdom teeth extraction appointments.
Removal Is Always Painful
It's common for patients to avoid going to the dentist for wisdom tooth removal, simply because they're afraid that it might hurt. At our Dumas dental office, we offer dental anesthetic to prevent discomfort. We also bring in a trusted periodontist to complete your treatment. They can administer IV sedation so that you're completely calm.

At our Dumas practice, the typical cost for wisdom tooth removal is $2,500, but factors like the number of teeth being removed and the complexity of your case can make a difference in the total cost. Because it's necessary for your health, this procedure is eligible for dental insurance coverage. Sedation will not be covered, but considering its relaxing effects, it can be a wise investment in your comfort.

What Do I Need to Know
About Healing?
After your wisdom teeth removal, you'll need someone to drive you home. Before you go, our Dumas dental team will make sure that you leave knowing everything about the healing process.
For instance, you may need to take antibiotics to prevent infection and keep your gauze in place to allow a blood clot to form. You should also initially avoid brushing around the site of your removed teeth to keep the blood clots intact, and you'll want to stick to soft, room-temperature foods to minimize discomfort.
It's typical to experience some swelling and minor discomfort around the site of your extracted teeth, but these symptoms will fade as you heal.
